In what appears to be a relatively full and active schedule for Monday’s AISD Board meeting, it would be the Section B of the listed Personnel Items that should draw some interest and attention.

It includes:

  • Appointment, employment, leave of absence, or dismissal of public officer(s), district employee(s), teacher(s), teacher/coach(es), administrator(s), and/or supervisory staff.
  • Approval of District staff to carry a firearm in accordance with TEC 37.0814.
  • Possible action regarding letter of retirement/resignation from Superintendent Doug Loomis, to be effective June 30, 2025.

KGNC has confirmed with Superintendent Loomis, “The rumors are true.” It appears this school year will be his last.

Loomis was chosen as interim superintendent in 2018 upon the acceptance of Dr. Dana West’s letter of resignation. He would have the ‘interim’ removed from his title in March 2019. Loomis has spent nearly four decades within the Amarillo Independent School District, beginning as a PD teacher at Wolflin Elementary School.

His career also saw him serve as assistant principal a Houston Middle School and Palo Duro High School, later becoming principal of Amarillo High School. He also served as Executive Director over the Caprock cluster of schools.
