There was some lengthy – and at times – clearly frustrating conversation between the five council members Tuesday when it came to the Sanctuary City for the Unborn ordinance, and how it is to be presented to the voter on the November 5 ballot.

Mayor Cole Stanley, after assuring the public and media in a moment of animation, the council is not changing the language of the ordinance, but merely doing so in the ballot language. Mayor Stanley’s action came after some input from City Attorney Bryan McWilliams, who suggested striking ‘establish a criminal offense’ to say ‘and it shall be unlawful’ in the ballot language.

Councilman Josh Craft expressed concern the ballot language would force change to an existing city code and sought clarification. After some back-and-forth with Mayor Stanley, Craft would later express his concern with his vote.

The council chose to make McWilliams’ suggestion, and voted 4-1 to approve Resolution 08-13-24-2 with the suggested amendment. Craft was the lone dissenting vote.
