Idris Elba & Caleb McLaughlin Tackle Urban Cowboy Subculture In Netflix Movie
Idris Elba gives a much-needed history lesson on the urban cowboy subculture in the first trailer for Netflix’s Concrete Cowboys.
Adapted from G. Neri’s novel Ghetto Cowboy and directed by Ricky Straub, the film stars Stranger Things actor Caleb McLaughlin as Cole, a troubled teen who spends the summer in North Philadelphia learning about the Black urban horsemanship community from his estranged father, played by Elba.
“50 per cent of all cowboys were Black. Even the Lone Ranger was Black,” says one of men sitting across from Elba in the promo.
“Who’s the Lone Ranger?” asks McLaughlin’s Cole.
Jharrel Jerome, Lorraine Toussaint, Byron Bowers and Clifford “Method Man” Smith also star in the father-son drama.
As previously noted, this is one of two Western-type films that Elba will star in on Netflix. The English actor will also star in the cowboy film The Harder They Fall, alongside Lakeith Stanfield, Regina King,Zazie Beetz, Delroy Lindo and Lovecraft Country‘s Jonathan Majors.
Concrete Cowboy premieres on Netflix April 2.
