One man is behind bars for an assault that claimed a life.

The Amarillo Police Department was called out to the   Georgia Street Taphouse on June 5th at 11:30 pm on the report of a man causing a disturbance and refusing to leave.

While officers were en route to the scene information came in that one man assaulted another man in the parking lot, causing life-threatening injuries, and an ambulance was requested and the suspect left the scene.

The victim, 58-year-old Joe Luis Gonzales, was taken to an area hospital and later to 

In the early morning hours Monday, Gonzales died from his injuries.

The Amarillo Police Department Homicide Unit took over the investigation and a warrant for murder was issued for the suspect, 21-year-old Joel Arellano Mendez Jr.

Police say on June 11, Mendez Jr. was arrested and booked into the Potter County Jail on the murder warrant.

The case is still under investigation by the APD Homicide Unit.
