Monday Sports Update – Sod Poodles Shut Out RoughRiders At HODGETOWN

AMARILLO, Texas – The Sod Poodles shutout the Frisco RoughRiders 2-0 in the series finale in front 6,436 at HODGETOWN. Amarillo starting pitcher Ronald Bolaños was excellent Sunday night in his 11th bid, tossing six quality scoreless innings against Frisco. Bolaños didn’t allow a run on just three hits and struck out six batters over 90 pitches in his seventh win of the season. The Sod Poodles begin a six-game road trip Tuesday in Tulsa as they faceoff with the Drillers. First pitch for game one of the series is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

Greinke Wins 200th To End Astros’ Five-Game Skid

(Oakland, CA) — Zack Greinke allowed one run over seven innings to log his 200th win as the Astros beat the A’s 4-1 in Oakland. Alex Bregman had four hits, including a three-run homer. Roberto Osuna closed it out for his 27th save. Houston snapped a five-game losing streak.

Astros Open 10-Game Homestand Tonight

(Houston, TX) — The Astros will open a 10-game homestand tonight with the first four against the Tigers. Wade Miley will start the first game for Houston. The Angels and Rays will each come to Minute Maid Park for three-game series after Detroit leaves.

Twins Top Rangers To Complete Four-Game Sweep

(Arlington, TX) — Emmanuel Clase gave up three runs in the eighth inning in the Rangers’ 6-3 loss to the Twins in Arlington. Shin-Soo Choo hit his 20th homer and Jeff Mathis contributed a two-run single in the loss. Starter Lance Lynn yielded three runs over five innings in a no-decision. Minnesota swept the four-game series.

Cowboys Top Rams In Hawaii

(Honolulu, HA) — The Cowboys beat the Rams 14-10 on Saturday in Honolulu in their second preseason game. Dak Prescott engineered a 97-yard, 12-play touchdown drive in Dallas’ opening series. Rookie running back Tony Pollard scored on a 14-yard touchdown run to end it and end the night for the first team. Backup quarterback Cooper Rush orchestrated a 72-yard touchdown drive in the third quarter. He completed 10 of 16 passes for 83 yards and an eight-yard touchdown pass to Devin Smith. Linebacker Chris Covington suffered a left shoulder injury on the opening kickoff against the Rams and did not return.

Cowboys Return To Frisco, Resume Practice Tomorrow

(Frisco, TX) — The Cowboys are finished with their training camp in Oxnard, California. They will resume practice tomorrow at The Star in Frisco with the first of five open sessions. The 1-and-1 Cowboys will host the Houston Texans in their third preseason game this coming Saturday at AT&T Stadium.

Texans Whip Lions In Preseason

(Houston, TX) — Deshaun Watson guided the Texans to a touchdown on his only drive in the Texans’ 30-23 victory over the Lions in Houston. Watson completed 5-of-7 passes for 60 yards and a touchdown. Texans rookie first-round pick offensive lineman Tytus Howard broke a finger in his left hand. Backup quarterback Joe Webb completed 14 of 25 passes for 186 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Greg Howell Jr. led the rushing attack with 84 yards on 15 totes and a touchdown. The Texans will play this coming Saturday at the Cowboys.

Justin Thomas Claims BMW Championship

(Medinah, IL) — After posting a 61 on Saturday, Justin Thomas shot a 68 to win the BMW Championship at 25-under-par. Patrick Cantlay took home second after a 65 put his final tally at 22 under. Hideki Matsuyama rebounded from a rough 73 on Saturday, to post a 63 and finish at minus-20. Tony Finau finished fourth at 18-under while Brandt Snedeker and Jon Rahm tied for fifth at 16-under.

(Bristol, TN) — Denny Hamlin took first in the Bass Pro Shops NRA Night Race on Saturday. Hamlin outlasted Matt DiBenedetto, who would have had his first career victory, but ended with a career-best second place. This was Hamlin’s fourth victory of the season. Brad Keselowski finished third, followed by Kyle Busch, who came from 31st to finish fourth. Chase Elliot ended fifth. Busch holds on to first in the points standings, 39 ahead of Joey Logano and 77 ahead of Hamlin.

FC Dallas, Montreal Tie

(Montreal, Quebec) — FC Dallas and the Impact played to a 3-3 draw on Saturday in Montreal. Zdenek Ondrasek, Reto Ziegler and Ryan Hollingshead scored the Dallas goals. Dallas and Portland are tied with 37 points for the final MLS West playoff berth, but the Timbers have played two fewer matches.

Wings Fall To Sun

(Uncasville, CT) — The Dallas Wings trailed by 12 points after the first quarter in a 78-68 loss yesterday at the Connecticut Sun. That snapped the Wings’ three-game winning streak as they dropped to 9-and-18 in WNBA play. They are back on the court Thursday at the Minnesota Lynx.

(Austin, TX) — Legendary Longhorns running back Cedric Benson died in a motorcycle accident in Austin. He was 36. Benson rushed for 5,540 yards in four years with Texas, stepping off more than one-thousand yards in each season. He led the nation with 21 rushing touchdowns in 2003 and was the 2004 Doak Walker Award winner. The Chicago Bears picked Benson fourth overall in the 2005 draft and he played eight years in the NFL.
