Trails at Palo Duro Canyon have been closed due to the extreme heat. The main road was also impacted just days ago by a rock slide.

PDC officials remind us that while highs in and around Amarillo and Canyon might be 100 or so, in the canyon, trail temperatures can reach 135 to 140 degrees.

The preemptive closures are said to prevent at least 35 rescues per day due to heat, or becoming stranded by floods or rock slides.
