Scammer Posing As APD Officer Demanding Bitcoin Payment

The Amarillo Police Department is warning Amarillo and Canyon residents of a new scam involving a man posing as an APD officer.

According to a news release, an unknown man is posing as Amarillo Police Department Sergeant Kevin Anderson.

The scammer is calling people and falsely claiming that he has warrants and demands payment in bitcoin to avoid being arrested.

APD wants to remind the public that:

• Police will never ask for payment in bitcoin.
• If someone claims to be an officer, demand their badge number and ID.
• Hang up and call local police to verify the identity of the person calling.
• Do not use any phone numbers provided by the caller.
• If you’re unsure whether you have warrants, call local law enforcement and check.
