Tuesday Sports Update – Sod Poodles Drop Series Opener To Drillers
(Amarillo, Texas) – The Sod Poodles dropped the series opener to the Tulsa Drillers by a final score of 9-2 in front of 4,839 at HODGETOWN. Hudson Potts led the Sod Poodles offensively with his 2-for-5 performance with an RBI. Soddies starter Jesse Scholtens tossed five innings and struck out nine batters but picked up the loss in his 19th start of the season. Amarillo remains two games up on Midland in the second half South Division standings. The Sod Poodles continue their eight-game homestand against Tulsa tonight at 7:05. .
Minor Will Start Tonight In Anaheim
(Anaheim, CA) — Left-hander Mike Minor will start tonight for the Rangers, who continue this trip with a two-game series against the Angels in Anaheim. The Angels roughed up Minor for a season-high seven runs on 10 hits in a start last week. The Angels have lost five in a row and will counter with Andrew Heaney. Texas is 26-and-41 on the road. Morton, Verlander Square Off Tonight
(Houston, TX) — Charlie Morton, who pitched the previous two seasons with the Astros, will start tonight at Minute Maid Park, but this time he will be in a Tampa Bay uniform. Morton is 13-and-5 with a 2.85 ERA for the Rays. Justin Verlander, who is 15-and-5 with a 2.77 ERA, will start for Houston. Both are Cy Young candidates. Houston has won four straight and seven of eight.

Cowboys’ Starting Tackle Hurt In Practice
(Frisco, TX) — Cowboys starting right tackle La’el Collins left practice with a groin injury. The team will have its final open practice today at Ford Center. Pro Bowl cornerback Byron Jones practiced for the first time since the playoffs in January as he rehabbed from hip surgery. Defensive end Taco Charlton did not practice because of an ankle injury. The Cowboys will be at home Thursday to meet Tampa Bay in their preseason finale. They will open the regular season on September 8th against the Giants.
Texans Continue Practice Sans Clowney
(Houston, TX) — Texans Pro Bowl pass rusher Jadeveon Clowney remains absent from practice as a contract dispute holdout. Houston has shopped Clowney on the trade market, but he would need to sign his franchise tag tender to be dealt. The Texans put running back Lamar Miller and offensive lineman David Steinmetz on the injured reserve. Miller tore his ACL in the loss Saturday to Dallas, while Steinmetz broke his ankle in practice last week. The Texans waived cornerbacks Derrick Jones and Deante Burton. The Texans will conclude preseason play on Thursday against the LA Rams at NRG Stadium.
Serena Runs Over Sharapova In U.S. Open First Round
(Flushing Meadows, NY) — Six-time U.S. Open champion Serena Williams is safely through to the second round in New York. The eighth-seeded American easily dispatched former champion Maria Sharapova 6-1, 6-1 in Monday’s first round at Flushing Meadows. It was the first time the two rivals have ever played at the U.S. Open.
FC Dallas Will Host FC Cincinnati Next
(Frisco, TX) — FC Dallas is back in the MLS playoff picture. After a 5-1 victory Sunday over the Houston Dynamo, Dallas is seventh in the MLS West with 40 points. The top seven teams qualify for the playoffs. Dallas trails six-place San Jose by one point. Dallas will host FC Cincinnati on Saturday. The first-year expansion club has a MLS-worst 18 points and has been outscored by 37 goals in 27 matches.

On Saturday, TCU will host Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Tenth-ranked Texas will meet Louisiana Tech in Austin. Baylor and Stephen F. Austin will collide in Waco. SMU with UT transfer Shane Buechele starting at quarterback will travel to Arkansas State. Abilene Christian will be at North Texas. Briles Coaching High School Team
(Mount Vernon, Texas) (AP) — Former Baylor coach Art Briles has returned to coaching football in Texas. He is coaching a high school team in Mount Vernon, about 100 miles east of Dallas. The move comes three years after he was fired by Baylor in the fallout from a sprawling sexual assault scandal. Some residents were surprised by the hire while others are excited by what Briles might bring to the team. The season opener for Briles and his young Tigers is Friday night on the road in Bonham, Texas.
