Wednesday Sports Update – Astros Rout Rays

(Houston, TX) — The Astros did not treat former teammate Charlie Morton kindly in his return to Houston. They chased Morton after four innings in a 15-1 rout of Tampa Bay to win their fifth in a row. Yordan Alvarez belted two homers and drove in four for the Astros, while Alex Bregman had three hits and scored three runs. Justin Verlander did not allow a run to pick up his 16th win, but was ejected in the sixth inning by umpire Pat Hoberg for debating balls and strikes.

(Houston, TX) — Gerrit Cole could set a couple of franchise records tonight when he starts for the Astros against the Rays at Minute Maid Park. Cole has won 12 consecutive decisions, one shy of the Houston record held by Wade Miller, 2002, and Mark Portugal, 1993. He has 14 double-figure strikeout games, tying him with J.R. Richard for the franchise best. Tampa will counter with Ryan Yarbrough.

Trout Homers In Angels’ Victory Over Rangers

(Anaheim, CA) — Mike Trout belted his 43rd home run as the Angels beat the Rangers 5-2 in Anaheim. Angels starter Andrew Heaney allowed one run over six innings and struck out 10 in a no-decision. Kole Calhoun laced a two-RBI double and Brian Goodwin delivered a pinch two-run single in the LA four-run seventh. Hansel Robles closed it out for his 19th save. The Angels snapped a five-game skid. Mike Minor took the loss, giving up four runs while pitching into the seventh. Danny Santana homered for Texas, which is 26-and-42 on the road.

Rangers, Angels Close Out Mini-Series Tonight

(Anaheim, CA) — Ariel Jurado  will start tonight for the Rangers against the Angels in Anaheim to wrap up this two-game series. The Angels will send left-hander Patrick Sandoval to the mound. Sod Poodles Fall To Drillers

AMARILLO, Texas – The Sod Poodles fell 8-4 to the Tulsa Drillers Tuesday night in front of 5,083 at HODGETOWN. Kyle Overstreet led the Sod Poodles offensively going 3-for-4 with a run and RBI. Sod Poodles starter MacKenzie Gore tossed 1.2 innings in his fifth Texas League start, striking out five of the six batters he faced. The Sod Poodles remain one game up on Midland in the Texas League second-half South Division standings. The Sod Poodles continue their four-game series against the Tulsa Drillers this morning. First pitch is scheduled for 11:05 a.m.

Cowboys Keep Grinding Without Elliott

(Frisco, TX) — While the Cowboys held their final open practice in Frisco, running back Ezekiel Elliott is working out with Hall of Famer Marshall Faulk in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Elliott remains a holdout in a contract dispute. Rookie Tony Pollard and veteran Alfred Morris would likely get the bulk of the carries if Elliott remains absent. Head coach Jason Garrett said, “you focus on the guys who are here” after the practice. The Cowboys will be home tomorrow night to meet Tampa Bay in their preseason finale at AT&T Stadium. They will open the regular season on September 8th against the Giants.

(Undated) — The Miami Dolphins are showing heavy interest in Houston Texans pass-rusher Jadeveon Clowney. Multiple outlets report Clowney has recently met with Dolphins first-year head coach Brian Flores and other members of the team in hopes of trying to persuade him to accept a trade to Miami. Both sides appear interested in a trade but no deal is imminent, according to ESPN. The three-time Pro Bowler remains a holdout and has not yet signed his one-year franchise tender with the Texans. The Texans will conclude preseason play tomorrow night against the LA Rams at NRG Stadium.

Tigers Woods Has Arthroscopic Knee Surgery

(Undated) — Golf star Tiger Woods is recovering from arthroscopic surgery on his left knee. He says he had the procedure last week to fix some minor cartilage damage, but anticipates being able to play a PGA Tour event in Japan in late October. Woods failed to qualify at last week’s Tour Championship.

FC Dallas Demand Dynamo Fans Exit

(Frisco, TX) — FC Dallas security and police escorted Houston Dynamo fans out of Toyota Stadium in the 5-1 Dallas victory Sunday after several physical altercations between fans of both sides broke out. About 10 minutes remained in the match when the visiting supporters loaded their buses without incident. FC Dallas released a statement yesterday on the decision after conferring with Frisco police and stadium security. Dallas will host FC Cincinnati on Saturday.

Wings Play Tomorrow In Chicago

(Chicago, IL) — The Dallas Wings will be on the road tomorrow night and that’s a bad place for them to be. They take a 1-and-13 record in away games into a match at the Chicago Sky. Dallas is last in the WNBA West with a 9-and-20 record.

Frogs head coach Gary Patterson announced Kansas State-transfer Alex Delton would start at quarterback. Tenth-ranked Texas will meet Louisiana Tech in Austin. Baylor and Stephen F. Austin will collide in Waco. SMU will travel to Arkansas State with UT transfer Shane Buechele starting at quarterback. Abilene Christian will be at North Texas.
