Mavs Lose Powell To Achilles Injury

Rockets Will Host Nuggets Tonight

(Houston, TX) — The Rockets will try to snap a four-game slide tonight when they host the Denver Nuggets. Houston lost 112-107 to the Thunder Monday at home despite Russell Westbrook’s triple-double. The Rockets will open a four-game trip Friday at Minnesota.

Stars Take All-Star Break

Astros Will Interview Banister

(Houston, TX) — Astros owner Jim Crane confirmed he would interview former Rangers manager Jeff Banister today. He said he would like to narrow the search to three or four names by the weekend and hire a manager early next week to replace A.J. Hinch, who was fired over the sign-stealing scandal. Crane also said the players would come out with a strong statement as a team and apologize when spring training starts.

Jeter, Walker Voted Into Hall Of Fame

(Cooperstown, NY) — Derek Jeter and Larry Walker are entering the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Both were announced as two new members in the Class of 2020. Jeter was just one vote shy of becoming the second unanimously-elected member of the Hall. Home run king Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens and Curt Schilling all fell short.

Cowboys Staff At Senior Bowl

(Mobile, AL) — Cowboys chief operating officer Stephen Jones and other members of the front office staff are in Mobile, Alabama scouting the Senior Bowl practices as part of preparation for the NFL draft. The game will be Saturday. Dallas has the 17th overall pick in the first round.

Baylor Hires Defensive Coordinator

(Waco, TX) — Baylor head football coach Dave Aranda has hired Ron Roberts to be his defensive coordinator. Roberts has been at Louisiana-Lafayette, which ranked 18th nationally last season in allowing 19.7 points per game. Also, Vincent Guinta, Oregon State’s director of football player personnel since 2015, is taking a similar position on Aranda’s staff.

SMU Hires Garrett Riley As Offensive Coordinator

DALLAS (AP) — SMU has hired Garrett Riley as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. The younger brother of Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley was set to be promoted to offensive coordinator at Appalachian State. Garrett Riley had served as running backs coach for the Mountaineers in 2019. Like his older brother, Garrett Riley spent time on the Texas Tech roster as a quarterback before going into coaching. The younger Riley also played a season at Stephen F. Austin.

(Undated) — In area college basketball last night, TCU upset number-18 Texas Tech 65-54 in Big 12 play in Fort Worth. Desmond Bane led the Frogs with 27 points. Texas A&M rallied to win 66-64 at Missouri. Tonight, SMU will host East Carolina. Tomorrow, the West Texas A&M Buffaloes will be at Texas A&M-Kingsville.

Watt Will Host Saturday Night Live

(Houston, TX) — Texans defensive end J.J. Watt will not be rushing the passer in the Super Bowl on February 2nd. Instead, the night before he will be hosting Saturday Night Live. The last NFL player to host an episode was Giants’ quarterback Eli Manning on May 5th, 2012. He will be the first athlete to host SNL since Charles Barkley on March 3, 2018.
