The Texas Workforce Commission gifted Amarillo College more than $300 thousand dollars to be used for AC’s welding program.

Known as the JET Grant, the money was used by the college to secure live welders and other equipment – as well as virtual reality training technology – essentially doubling its current welding lab capacity.

That VR technology allows students to practice and create the muscle memory needed, while cutting down on material costs.

According to labor market projections provided by the TWC, and labor market analytic firm Lightcast, the need for welders will increase by 22 percent in the Panhandle by 2030.
