The Canyon ISD has voted to approve staff to carry concealed firearms while on campus.

That vote was taken during a meeting Thursday evening at the CISD support center. The approval was given with the Guardian/Defender Program, and in an effort to comply with House Bill 3 – the new school security law – which calls for campuses to have armed personnel by September 1.

Staff must meet strict requirements, including training, psychological evaluations, and clear the application process. Lock boxes and other safety precautions will be in place for the safety of not only the students, but the staff.

The Guardian/Defender Program is a volunteer-based program, and school officials are working together to ensure they have made this program as safe as possible for all involved.
