A  report earlier this month from the Texas Department of State Health Services that stated Potter County has some of the highest STD and HIV rates in the state, the City of Amarillo is taking steps to decrease those numbers.

The City has been funding an HIV Prevention Program program since 1987, and the Department of Health Services of Amarillo will now receive about $300,000 over the next five years.

The extra money will go towards HIV treatment, a truck that will allow remote location testing around the community and supplies for testing.

The program will also be educating the community on safe sex, the various diseases that unprotected sex can lead to, and the best ways to protect yourself.

Amarillo’s Department of Public Health says that one step you can take to protect yourself is to get tested.
