License Plate Readers

The Amarillo Police Department’s Regional Crime Center is putting in license plate readers across town.
The readers have the capability to read a plate as a car is rolling through the city.
They’re looking for stolen vehicles, stolen license plates, registered sex offenders, and wanted, and missing people.
Police officials say It can even look for the make, model, and color of a vehicle, so it’s an investigative tool sometimes where we wouldn’t have any leads we can pull those cameras up and start searching for the suspect,
The system crosses databases and sends alerts to the officer saying a car or person is wanted.
Thirty-seven of the devices are to be installed at the end of the month throughout the city and data will be kept for thirty days and then deleted.
Funding will come from the Project Safe Neighborhood Program
