With the school year finally upon us, it’s important to understand the impact lack of sleep can have on a person.

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine says the average adult needs at least 7 hours of sleep a night, and when that minimum isn’t achieved many students turn to caffeine.

The US Food and Drug Administration says that 80% of adults use caffeine daily and that while a moderate amount can be helpful, too much can be dangerous.

The FDA says 400 milligrams should be the maximum for the average person per day, or about the same as 4 to 5 cups of coffee.

Instead of caffeine to help with energy, experts recommend eating a healthy diet with fruits and veggies, regular exercise, and adequate sleep.
