One Man Dead After Two Wrecks On I-27

A wreck Monday Afternoon has claimed a life.

Amarillo police were called to northbound I-27 between Georgia and 45th Avenue at 4:10 pm where a 2016 Toyota Tacoma, driven by 24-year-old Rolando Martinez of Amarillo, had rear-ended a 2016 Toyota Camry, driven by a 50-year-old Amarillo woman.

Both vehicles were unable to exit the highway, and traveled several hundred feet, coming to a stop in the inside lane on the highway.

A semi-truck driven by a 57-year-old Woodward, OK man, was unable to avoid hitting the stopped vehicles and struck the Tacoma which struck the Camry again.

The driver of the Camry was transported to an Amarillo hospital with non-life threatening injuries, and Martinez was transported with life-threatening injuries.

Martinez later died as a result of his injuries in the crash.

A second crash  occurred on southbound I-27 between Georgia Street and 45th Avenue at the same time but the APD has not released information on this incident

Both wrecks are being handled by the Traffic Investigation Squad of the Amarillo Police Department.
