The Amarillo Police Department reported officers were responding to a gunshot in the area of Western and Wolflin streets Thursday morning. This incident is connected to the first homicide of the new year.
At about 8 p.m. Wednesday, police responded to a reported shooting in Sam Houston Park. The victim, later identified as 20-year-old John Edward Red, was taken to a local hospital where he later died as a result of his injuries.
The investigation into the shooting of Red led the APD Homicide Unit to obtain a murder warrant for 18-year-old Jhequaylen Elija Badillo.
Badillo’s home was under surveillance Thursday when he ran, leading police on a chase that ended when the suspect ran between two houses in the area of Wolflin and Western Streets. He was later found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
