Texans Urged To Stay Home

Texas is urging residents to stay home as a result of the major winter storm that’s pounding much of the U.S. In a Tweet today, the state’s Department of Public Safety said, “it’s downright dangerous to drive in these conditions.” The department also issued a reminder from Governor Greg Abbott saying if folks need to travel, immediately call roadside assistance if you become stranded. This comes as a number of flights have also been grounded due to the weather, with Houston’s Hobby international airport canceling all operations for the day. The airport will remain closed until noon tomorrow while crews work to de-ice its runways.

The National Weather Service is reporting the Arctic chill brought new record low temperatures across the Plains today. Cities in Texas, Kansas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Minnesota and Colorado saw the lowest temperatures they’ve had in ten or more years. The Weather Service predicts temperatures will drop even lower in many of those places by tomorrow morning. Minnesota is reporting the lowest temperatures out of Hibbing and Chisholm, clocking in at negative 38-degrees. The previous record low was negative 32-degrees in 1939.
